Nobody thinks clearly straight after a collision. Having an order to work through helps, so here it is.

1. Check for injuries first

People before vehicles, always. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately. Do not move someone with a possible neck or back injury unless there is an immediate danger such as fire.

2. Make the scene safer

If the vehicles are drivable and the crash is minor, move them out of the travel lanes, onto the shoulder or a nearby car park. If they are not drivable, leave them, put the hazards on and get everyone somewhere safe away from traffic. Standing between two damaged cars on a live road is how a second, worse collision happens.

3. Know what Alabama requires you to report

Alabama law requires a crash to be reported when it results in injury, death, or property damage of $500 or more. Given what modern bumpers and headlight assemblies cost, most collisions clear that threshold easily. When in doubt, call it in and get a report: the report number is what your insurer will ask for first.

4. Exchange the right information

• Name, address and phone number.
• Insurance company and policy number.
• Driver’s licence number and licence plate.
• Vehicle make, model and colour.

Keep it factual. It is natural to apologise, but leave fault to the insurers and the report.

5. Photograph more than you think you need

Before anything is moved, if it is safe:

• Wide shots showing the position of both vehicles and the road.
• Close-ups of every damaged area on both cars.
• Licence plates, and the other driver’s insurance card.
• Skid marks, debris, traffic signals and signs.
• The weather and road conditions.

Photographs taken before the vehicles move are worth far more than anything you can reconstruct afterwards.

6. Get independent witness details

A name and phone number from someone with no stake in the outcome can settle a disputed claim months later. Ask before they drive off.

7. Arrange the tow

If your car is not safely drivable, do not drive it. Fluid on the road, a wheel sitting at an angle, airbag deployment, or anything touching a tyre means it goes on a truck.

You generally have the right to choose your own towing company rather than accepting whoever arrives first. Ask where the vehicle is being taken and get that in writing: recovering a car from an unfamiliar storage lot is an avoidable headache.

8. Tell your insurer promptly

Report it the same day if you can, even if you are not claiming. Give them the report number, the photographs and the other driver’s details.
