Standing next to your own car looking at the keys on the driver’s seat is a special kind of frustrating. Work through these before you try anything drastic.

Check every door, the tailgate and the windows

It sounds obvious, and it works often enough to be worth thirty seconds. People lock the driver’s door by habit and leave a rear door or the tailgate unlatched.

Check your phone

Most manufacturers now offer remote unlock through an app: FordPass, myChevrolet, Toyota, Kia Access, MyHyundai and others. If you have ever registered the vehicle, remote unlock may be two taps away. Some brands will also do it over the phone with proof of ownership.

Find the spare

Not just the obvious one. Spare keys turn up with a partner, in a desk drawer at work, or with whoever helped you move house. A ten-minute round trip beats a service call.

Do not use a coat hanger

This is the part worth taking seriously. On cars built in the last twenty years, forcing a hanger or a wedge past the weather seal risks:

• Side airbag deployment. Many vehicles have curtain or seat-mounted airbags inside the door pillar and seat. Setting one off costs far more than a lockout call.
• Damaged linkages. Modern latches use plastic clips and cables rather than the simple rods older cars had. They break.
• Wrecked weather seals and paint, which then leak and rust.
• Broken window regulators, if the glass is levered.

A professional lockout uses an inflatable wedge and a long-reach tool designed for the job, in the right place, with controlled pressure.

When it is an emergency, say so

Two situations change everything: a child or a pet locked inside, especially in Alabama heat. A closed car parked in the sun can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes. Do not wait for a service call. Llame al 911. Emergency services will get the door open immediately and will not charge you for the decision.

What to have ready when you call us

• Year, make and model.
• Exactly where you are: a shopping centre name is not enough, tell us which entrance or parking level.
• Proof that the car is yours. Any legitimate operator will ask; registration, insurance on your phone, or a matching ID usually does it.
