Why Your Car Overheats in Alabama Summers, and What to Do
Birmingham summers put real strain on a cooling system, and the failures show up in stopped traffic on a 95-degree afternoon rather than at highway speed. Here is how to read it and what to do.
What overheating actually looks like
- The temperature gauge climbing past its normal position toward the red.
- Steam or vapour from the bonnet, often mistaken for smoke.
- A sweet, syrupy smell, which is coolant.
- The heater blowing cold when it should blow hot.
- A loss of power, or the engine running rough as it protects itself.
What to do, in order
- Turn off the air conditioning. It removes a significant load from the engine straight away.
- Turn the heater on full. It feels wrong on a hot day and it genuinely helps: the heater core pulls heat out of the coolant.
- Get out of stop-start traffic. Airflow through the radiator is what cools it. If you can keep moving gently, do.
- Pull over safely and switch off. If the gauge keeps climbing, stop. Continuing to drive is what turns a hose into a head gasket.
- Open the bonnet only when it is safe, to let heat escape, and stand clear while you do.
Never open a hot radiator cap
This is the one that causes injuries every summer. A hot cooling system is pressurised, and the coolant inside is well above boiling point. Releasing that pressure sends scalding fluid and steam upward and outward. Wait until the engine is cold (that means genuinely cold, usually thirty minutes or more) before touching the cap or the expansion tank.
The usual causes
- Low coolant, generally from a leak rather than consumption.
- A failed thermostat stuck closed.
- A cooling fan that is not running, which is why it only overheats when stationary.
- A failing water pump, sometimes with a whine or a weep.
- A radiator blocked externally with leaves and debris, or internally with scale.
- A collapsed or split hose, often the cheapest fix if caught early.
Should you top it up and drive on?
If it has cooled fully and you can add coolant, that may get you a short distance, but only if you know where it went. An engine that empties its coolant again within a few miles has a real leak, and each overheating cycle risks warping a head or destroying a gasket. Those repairs cost many multiples of a tow.
The judgement is simple: a car that has overheated once and holds coolant can usually be driven carefully to a workshop. A car that overheats repeatedly should go on a truck.
