7 Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die
Dead batteries are the single most common reason drivers call for roadside help, and the frustrating part is that most batteries give warning first. Here is what to watch for.
1. The engine cranks slowly
That laboured rurr… rurr… rurr before the engine catches is the clearest early sign. A healthy battery spins the starter briskly. If cranking has got noticeably lazier over a few weeks, the battery is on its way out.
2. Headlights dim at idle
Watch your headlights against a garage door with the engine idling. If they brighten noticeably when you rev, the charging system is struggling to keep up.
3. It only starts after sitting overnight, or only when warm
A battery that works fine some mornings and not others is failing intermittently. Intermittent faults do not heal; they become permanent, usually at the worst moment.
4. The battery warning light
The little battery symbol does not mean “replace the battery”: it means the charging system is out of range. That could be the battery, the alternator, or a belt. Either way it needs looking at before it strands you.
5. Corrosion on the terminals
White or bluish crust on the posts adds resistance and can mimic a dead battery. Sometimes cleaning the terminals fixes a no-start entirely. If the corrosion keeps coming back quickly, the battery is venting.
6. A swollen or misshapen case
A case that bulges has been cooked. Replace it. Do not try to nurse it through another month.
7. Age
Most batteries last three to five years. In Alabama, plan for the shorter end of that range.
Why summer heat is harder on batteries than winter
Cold gets the blame because that is when batteries finally fail, but the damage is usually done in July. Heat accelerates the chemical wear inside the battery and evaporates fluid. A Birmingham summer of engine-bay temperatures degrades a battery quietly, and then the first genuinely cold morning, when the same battery has to work hardest, exposes it.
If your battery went through a hot summer and is over three years old, get it tested before winter rather than after.

A jump start will usually get you moving, but treat it as a diagnostic result, not a repair. If the car needs a jump twice in a week, the battery or the alternator is finished.
