When in doubt, call it in and get a report: the report number is what your insurer will ask for first.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Exchange the right information<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Name, address and phone number.<\/li>\n<li>Insurance company and policy number.<\/li>\n<li>Driver&#8217;s licence number and licence plate.<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle make, model and colour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep it factual. It is natural to apologise, but leave fault to the insurers and the report.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Photograph more than you think you need<\/h2>\n<p>Before anything is moved, if it is safe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wide shots showing the position of both vehicles and the road.<\/li>\n<li>Close-ups of every damaged area on both cars.<\/li>\n<li>Licence plates, and the other driver&#8217;s insurance card.<\/li>\n<li>Skid marks, debris, traffic signals and signs.<\/li>\n<li>The weather and road conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Photographs taken before the vehicles move are worth far more than anything you can reconstruct afterwards.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Get independent witness details<\/h2>\n<p>A name and phone number from someone with no stake in the outcome can settle a disputed claim months later. Ask before they drive off.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Arrange the tow<\/h2>\n<p>If your car is not safely drivable, do not drive it. Fluid on the road, a wheel sitting at an angle, airbag deployment, or anything touching a tyre means it goes on a truck.<\/p>\n<p>You generally have the right to choose your own towing company rather than accepting whoever arrives first. Ask where the vehicle is being taken and get that in writing: recovering a car from an unfamiliar storage lot is an avoidable headache.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Tell your insurer promptly<\/h2>\n<p>Report it the same day if you can, even if you are not claiming.
